Visionary Women presents Gloria Steinem

Celebrating the Feminist Legacy of Gloria Steinem

Moderator Cleo Wade shared the stage with legendary feminist, activist, writer and speaker Gloria Steinem in a powerful evening sponsored by Gucci to a packed crowd of hundreds of people at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel on November 18, 2019.

Gloria Steinem’s unrelenting ability to speak for justice and equality was celebrated this evening. In her very empowering and thoughtful interview this evening, here are some highlights of a night to be remembered.

Words according to Gloria Steinem

1. Advice on how to raise my daughter: “Don’t tell her anything. Listen to her because that’s how she knows she has something to say.”

2. “Because I’ve experienced the worst, I have hope.”

3. “You have to experience all 5 senses to have empathy.”

3. “You have to experience all 5 senses to have empathy.”

4. “The secret to aging is that you are still yourself.”

5. “If you look at the biggest indicator, in every country around the world of whether that country will be violent in its own streets and will be willing to use military violence against another country, the cause is not poverty, or access to natural resources, or religion, or even degree of democracy, its violence against females.”

6. Steinem attributes her philosophy to her mother and grandmothers who were Theosophists with the child-rearing approach. “You as a parent, or a family, are responsible for helping this child become who they already are, and that’s so much different to having to conform.”

7. “As I travel, I have never seen the degree of activism the way I am seeing today … It’s dangerous but I do think we are ‘woke’ in a way we have not have been otherwise.”
