Photographer
Moscow-born photographer Catherine Asanov had a series of unfortunate events that led to a series of fortunate events in a shockingly different place of Starkville, Mississippi. Picking up an 8×10 camera when she was 16 opened her eyes to a new world of magic in the darkroom. After attending Savannah College of Art & Design in Savannah, France and Atlanta, Catherine graduated valedictorian of her class and set off to Los Angeles. Her career as a photographer has included photographing for clients such as Sony Music, RCA, Becky G, J-LO, Gloria Trevi, NBC, Telemundo, Dreamworks, Badgley Mischka, Sunglasses Hut, The Ritz Carlton, Parade Design and many more.
Q: When did you decide you would pursue this passion? “When I was about 15. Maybe beforehand subconsciously. It was my high school art teacher that threw me into woodworking, painting and drawing before I discovered the darkroom. Out of all that, I was blessed with a full scholarship to Savannah College of Art and Design where I spent time in Savannah, France and Atlanta and ended up surprisingly graduating valedictorian.”
Q: It’s the era of women rising! What does that mean to you? “I think it’s a really great time for the women to stand up and rise in expression, but we all need the men behind us to always be consciously inclusive in order to really make any micro or macro statement.”
